Alternative investments are a wide range of investment categories that fall outside the traditional categories of investments such as stocks or bonds.

Managers of these special products use skilled investment strategies to produce returns. These returns are largely uncorrelated to traditional stock and bond market movements.

As well, alternative investment managers often have more flexibility than traditional money managers. They can use a variety of strategies to make money; for example, if they expect a market downturn they can take short positions in the stock market. Traditional money managers can generally only take long positions in the market.
